Feature Article: SleepTalk - A Gift of Love Through Positive Parenting

Brought to you by Sharon Bonello - Professional Counsellor at Clarity CWW Counselling

Sleep Talk is a therapy that was founded by Joanne Goulding and is now used to help many parents who have disruptive children, or children with issues, such as:

  • lack of confidence
  • self-esteem
  • bullying
  • peer pressure
  • lack of concentration (at school)
  • bed-wetting
  • nail biting
  • sibling rivalry
  • tantrums.

Sleep Talk works on the child's belief system. If they have a positive belief system already set up, chances are they will act out those beliefs and make them a reality. Sleep Talk has helped a multitude of children to develop a strong underlying belief that they are loved and lovable. In the process, it can also develop an even more loving relationship within the family group.

The process of Sleep Talk is the power of the spoken word: specific statements in the appropriate language for the age of the child are taught to the parents and primary care givers. By repeating proven positive and empowering phrases once your child is asleep, you are able to bypass your child's analytical mind, and establish a solid foundation, based on positive beliefs. This helps them to internalise the thoughts and live their lives without limiting and harmful thoughts of being incapable.

This must then be followed up by repeating the same statements during the day. Working on the sub-conscious, while self instruction works on the conscious. This will build up a confirmed support and statement system for the child. This therapy requires dedicated parents to continue this on an on-going basis.

Building the child's self-esteem and confidence can only enhance their self-worth and project them into their day to day life, with more capabilities to cope with whatever is handed out to them. They learn to deal with problems and challenges with renewed confidence, allowing them to grow into an adult with the tools and coping skills for any eventuality.

You can find out more by going on the Clarity CWW Counselling website www.claritycounselling.com.au which explains in more details the benefits that Sleep Talk can have for your child. You can also find out more and set up a program with Sharon Bonello at Clarity CWW Counselling, which will help you to go through the process with the statements, selecting the appropriate one for your child and assisting with on-going support and guidance with the monitoring of the child's progress.

The Sleep Talk book by Joanne Goulding is available for sale at Clarity CWW Counselling at the great price of $24.95. Also available are the story CD's that are helpful for encouraging your child to be more positive and support their self-esteem, giving them the confidence and love that is needed to live their lives in a happy and productive way. These CD's come in a selection of titles and suit different ages; they are available for $21.95 each.

Review Article: Children's Health Websites

Finding good health & and medical information on the internet is fraught with difficulties, due to the lack of "policing" of content of many sites which leads to innaccuracies.

This month, My Local Guide reviews two websites providing health and medical advice to parents.

The first is a useful US site called Kid's Health, which claims to only have expertly written and medically reviewed articles which are also reviewed again periodically for continued accuracy. Whilst we cannot guarantee that this is the case, the site does appear to be a comprehensive website with responsible and useful medical information across a wide range of topics.

  • For example, there are sections on infections, genera health, pregnancy & newborns, growth & development, emotions & behaviour, medical problems, Q&A, positive parenting, first aid and safety, doctors & hospitals.
  • In addition, there is information available in Spanish.

In Australia, we are lucky to have the Westmead Children's Hospital factsheets, a comprehensive range of expertly written and reviewed factsheets for parents about babies' and children's health topics.

My Local Guide is proud to work in collaboration with the Westmead Children's Hospital and its partners who author and review the articles on this fantastic website, by featuring some of their expert factsheets and articles on a monthly basis.

As always, you should always seek the advice of a medical practitioner if you have any concerns over the health of your child, but the many articles on the site do make very interesting and educational reading.

You can visit the Kid's Health website at www.kidshealth.org and Westmead Children's Hospital website at www.chw.edu.au/

Child Immunisations

Following the immunisation programme for 0-18 month old babies, there are some further immunisations which occur through childhood from 4 years old and some opportunities to "catch up" any injections that were missed earlier on.

The full immunisation programme may be viewed on the web.
