Layne Beachey
Planet Ark launched an Aluminium Can Recycling Campaign, encouraging Australians to consider the positive environmental benefits of recycling and increase the number of cans being recycled.
Australia has a high rate of aluminium can recycling, however, around one in three cans is not recycled.
Did You Know?
- Making aluminium cans from recycled materials uses 95% less energy than producing them from scratch.
- By saving energy you are helping to tackle climate change.
- Recycling a single aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours
- Recycling also diverts items from landfill and reduces litter.

Layne Beachley has donated her time to be ambassador for Planet Ark's Aluminium Can Recycling campaign. Here she answers a few questions about why she keeps coming back to help out.
What motivated you to get involved with the Aluminium Can Recycling Campaign?
- "I'm passionate about environmental causes and am always willing to help raise awareness and educate people on how easy it is to make a difference."
- "I used to recycle cans when I was a kid to buy lollies but these days the issues surrounding our recycling habits are much more serious. It's time we accepted responsibility for our choices and reduced our impact on the planet by doing something as simple as recycling aluminium cans."
What do you appreciate most about Australia's unique environment?
- "The beaches of course!! We have the most stunning beaches in the world and we tend to take them for granted."
What kind of things do you do to minimise your environmental impact?
- "We have a worm farm at home which reduces household waste considerably; I recycle everything I can; I buy recycled products; chose paper over plastic; avoid over-packaged goods; turn all lights out when I leave a room; I don't charge my phone over night; shut down my computer every night and turn off all power points when they aren't in use."
- "Everyone has the power to affect change."
