The discrimination and stigma experienced by people with a mental disorder is often due to a lack of understanding amongst the community and effectively discourages them from seeking early and appropriate help for these disorders. This can discourage people from seeking help for metal health problems or disorders - if you would like more information in relation to stress, depression, anxiety or other mental health issues, there are several options available to you including:

  • Contact the Mental Health Information Service on 1300 794 991 or visit www.mentalhealth.asn.au . The telephone information service provides information about mental health services in you local area, local support groups, good mental health practices and more.
  • Visit your local General Practitioner . They can give you a physical and mental health check up, assess and discuss your symptoms and, if required, provide you with a referral a health professional or specialised clinic which may include a psychiatrist or psychologist.
  • Visit your local community health or mental health centre . For contact details of your closest centre call the Mental Health Association's Information Service on 1300 794 991 or check the front of your local telephone directory under the Emergency, Health & Help section.

There are many other services that can provide information, advice or assistance for someone who is experiencing mental health problems, or for their family and friends.
